VISIT MONTIJO, LAND OF CONTRASTS BETWEEN THE RIVER AND THE COUNTRYSIDE

JUST 20 MINUTES FROM THE CAPITAL, MONTIJO IS THE IDEAL PLACE TO VISIT. HERE YOU WILL DISCOVER A LAND OF CONTRASTS LINKED TO THE COUNTRYSIDE AND THE RIVER, WITH A STRONG CULTURAL IDENTITY.

Republic Square

The municipality of Montijo, with a privileged location in the Metropolitan Area of Lisbon, is an easy and fast-access destination. Its history is intensely linked to the Tagus River, since a large area of its territory is delimited by it.

In the Historic Center, Praça da República is the public space par excellence. The 15th-century Mother Church of the Divine Holy Spirit is a must-see, but there is space for contemplation of tiled facades, wrought iron balconies and old wooden doors.

Riverside Front

Towards the river, on foot or by bike, discover the Front Riverside, where you can visit the Cais Maré Mill and enjoy the diversity of the fauna and flora of the Tagus Estuary, of which the beautiful flamingos are part. Continue towards moinho de vento do Esteval and discover how cereal was once transformed into flour.

Flamingos

The adventure continues in the parish of Atalaia, a place of religious worship. Explore the Shrine of Our Lady of Atalaia – with a splendid view of the Tagus – and the Church of Our Lady of Atalaia , 14th century.   To understand the strong spiritual component and rural past of the county, visit the Museum of Ex-Votos and the Agricultural Museum of Atalaia.

If the idea is to dive into the deeply rural landscape, explore the East Zone. In Saint Isidro de Pegões, one does not care in the peculiar architecture of the Settlement of Pegões – a unique example in the country – and the Church of St. Isidro de Pegões. Meet one of the most important contemporary Portuguese plastic artists – Artur Bual – and find his works in the Churches of Beeches and Pegões and the Monument of Homage to Agriculture

Cooperative Cellar of Pegões

At the end of the visit , the Adega Cooperativa de Pegões is the icing on the cake: meet the famous wines, awarded all over the world, while dreaming of the next stop, the village of Canha, with strong Alentejo influences. White houses, natural landscape, ribeira de Canha and dirt trails conducive to nature and adventure sports.
