Discovering Olhão: An Authentic Treasure of the Algarve

Visiting Olhão is to immerse yourself in a different  Algarve that is more genuine, quieter and deeply connected to the sea. This charming fishing town, situated on the southern coast of Portugal, enchants visitors with its authenticity, vibrant markets, and privileged access to the paradisiacal islands of the Ria Formosa.

Tradition and Culture by the Sea

Olhão is known for its strong fishing tradition, visible in the whitewashed facades of the houses, the colorful boats anchored in the port and, of course, the famous Municipal Market. Divided into two historic buildings on the waterfront, the market offers an explosion of aromas and flavors  from fresh fish and seafood to fruits, spices and regional products.

Doors to Paradise: Ria Formosa Islands

From the pier of Olhão, boats depart for some of the most stunning islands in the Algarve, such as Armona, Culatra and Farol. With white sand beaches, crystal clear waters, and a serene environment, they are perfect for those seeking tranquility and natural beauty. The Ria Formosa, in itself, is an ecological  wonder, a labyrinth of canals, marshes and islets that is home to impressive biodiversity.

 Walks through the Historic Center

The center of Olhão is an invitation to take a leisurely walk. The narrow, winding streets reveal Moorish-influenced cubic houses, old tiles, and small cafes where time seems to slow down. At dusk, the waterfront comes alive with locals and visitors enjoying the view of the estuary.

 Flavors of the Sea

Gastronomy is one of the great attractions of Olhão. Dishes such as seafood cataplana, razor clam rice and grilled cuttlefish are just some of the delights that celebrate the sea. Local restaurants, many overlooking the water, offer authentic and memorable culinary experiences.
