The 6 must-visit gardens in Lisbon

There are many wonders to discover when visiting Lisbon and, undoubtedly, gardens are among them. We have prepared some suggestions for gardens in Lisbon that should be part of your itinerary.

Lisbon is a multicultural and diverse city, where heritage, culture, the natural world and art go hand in hand

1. Torel Garden

Jardim do Torel

TOREL GARDEN

On Santana Hill you can find the emblematic Jardim do Torel, a renovated space with a beautiful landscape, which invites you to enjoy the long lawns and relax, or even have a picnic.

The aromas are intense and diverse, bringing memories of lavender and verbena and reminding us of the poets and singers who have already praised the space with their artistic expressions. The sculptures, the bandstand and the pond in this garden are other memorable features.

2. Ajuda Botanical Garden

Jardim Botânico da Ajuda

AJUDA BOTANICAL GARDEN

It's a garden with paid admission, but it's not expensive and worth every penny! Founded in 1768, it is located in the vicinity of the Ajuda Palace and was the first Botanical Garden in Portugal. Its project was in charge of the Italian botanist, Domingos Vandelli, who developed it at the request of King D. José to teach the princes here. This garden, with an area of 3.5 ha, is divided into two terraces. On the upper deck, with a breathtaking view over the Tagus River, we find a remarkable botanical collection and on the lower one an ornamental promenade garden with boxwood where there is no lack of carved stone elements and fountains.

3. Star Garden

Jardim da Estrela

STAR GARDEN

The nineteenth-century origin of Jardim da Estrela goes back to the old "Passeio da Estrela". Romantic-inspired and built in the style of English gardens, it is spread over an area of 4.6 ha and can be visited every day of the year.

With one of its six entrances facing the Basilica da Estrela, this garden features multiple attractions. Pay attention to the statuary elements, the bandstand worked in wrought iron, the fountain and the pond where ducks and carp delight those who visit it.

Surrounded by several points of tourist interest, in this garden, where fauna and flora coexist harmoniously, you will also find a children's playground, a kiosk and a café.

4. Gulbenkian Gardens

The Gulbenkian Gardens are one of the most acclaimed places in Lisbon and there are several reasons for this.

In addition to the great natural beauty of the garden and its long lawns, which invite you to rest or have picnics, this space has been the stage for many artistic activities, both in terms of music, poetry and theater. Learn about the history of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation

These gardens also have a pleasant café that allows you to get to know the daily life of the city a little better.

5. Monsanto Forest Park

Parque Florestal de Monsanto

MONSANTO FOREST PARK

The Monsanto Forest Park is one of the must-see places for those who love nature. Stretching over six different parishes and with more than 900 ha of forest, this Lisbon lung is a perfect place to run, hike, bike or relax a little.

Here you will have the opportunity to contemplate the natural world or to practice physical exercise, taking advantage of the climbing walls, mountain bike trails, pedestrian trails and the bike path.

6. Cold Greenhouse

COLD GREENHOUSE

In Parque Eduardo VII, also an emblematic garden, you will find the Estufa Fria, a green space created at the beginning of the twentieth century and named after it for the concern to keep its sensitive species in the shade.

In this space you will find several botanical species that are divided into the three parts of the greenhouse: the larger greenhouse, the hot greenhouse and the sweet greenhouse.

The great beauty of the space, along with the richness of its heritage, makes it a must-visit place in Lisbon.
